Why am I afraid to speak English?
Fear of speaking English is usually not caused by lack of vocabulary or grammar. It comes from fear of making mistakes and being judged. This fear creates a mental block that stops people from starting to speak, even when they understand English well.
Why fear appears when speaking
Speaking a foreign language exposes you to other people. Unlike reading or listening, speaking happens in real time and does not allow you to pause or correct yourself quietly.
Because of this, the brain treats speaking as a risky situation. It activates stress responses that make words harder to access, even if you know them.
Understanding does not remove fear
Many learners expect fear to disappear once their understanding improves. In reality, comprehension and speaking confidence develop separately. You can understand English very well and still feel blocked when you speak.
This does not mean you need more theory. It means your speaking system has not had enough low-pressure use.
Reducing fear through low-pressure speaking
Speaking alone removes social pressure. When no one is listening or evaluating you, the brain can focus on producing language instead of protecting itself.
Short periods of speaking out loud on your own help reduce fear and make it easier to speak later with other people.
